Need-Based
Federal Grants
for
Undergraduate Students
The Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) and
the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain
Talent Grant (National SMART Grant) are need-based gift
aid. To determine financial need, submission of the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required.
The Academic Competitiveness Grant is available to qualified
first-year and second-year undergraduate students who graduated
from high after January 1, 2006. The National SMART Grant is available
to qualified third-year and fourth-year undergraduate students
who graduated from high school after January 1, 2005.
Criteria for the ACG and National SMART Grant include U.S. citizenship
and Federal Pell Grant eligibility. Detailed information about
