Important 2008-2009 Financial Aid Announcement

Effective Fall 2008 Wayne State University is moving from the Federal Family Education Loan Program to the Federal Direct Loan Program. The current financial market climate and reduced federal subsidies have crippled the ability of many private lenders to offer significant borrower benefits and in some instances even remain in the student loan industry. The university has responded to these ongoing changes by taking measures to protect the interests of its students.

The Federal Direct Loan Program will provide students with a simple process to secure loan funds to cover their educational expenses. Loan funds will be borrowed directly from the U.S. Department of Education.

For the 2008-09 academic year, all students who wish to borrow Federal Stafford and Graduate PLUS loans will be required to complete Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Notes. First time loan borrowers will also be required to complete online Entrance Loan Counseling.

Be aware, that over the short term, you will see changes in your awards visible in Pipeline. This is a necessary step in WSU's transition to Direct Loans. The Office of Student Financial Aid will send out email notifications to students within the next few weeks with detailed instructions to secure their Federal Direct Loan funds.

For more information regarding the decision to move from the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) program to the Federal Direct Loan (DL) program please read the WSU press release.
